Summary of trip - Part 9

It is now Wednesday, July 9th and our first full day in Venice. We decide to take a trip to the neighboring islands of Burano and Murano. Burano is a 40 minute water bus ride from the water bus stop nearest our hotel. It is about 5 miles from Venice. It is a charming picturesque fishing village that is famous for its hand made lace. The town is very clean and colorful, truly a photographers paradise. Here are some of my favorite shots.







They say the colorful houses helped the fishermen find their way back to their homes. It really is a beautiful place, and I strongly recommend seeing it.

We then took the water bus over to the island of Murano. Murano is known for its glass making. It is said that the glass makers were forced to leave the main city of Venice to work on the outer island of Murano because of the risk of fire. We explored many shops that sold different glass wares. My daughter even purchased some small charms on a necklace, and some glass earrings. We watch some local craftsmen blowing glass as well. After all this we took the water bus back to our hotel and decided to look for somewhere nice to go for dinner.

Venetians seem to eat earlier than their Roman counterparts usually around 7PM. We had very nice dinner in a local restaurant called Cafe Diana. The owner was a big friendly man who encouraged passersby to look at the menu and have a seat if they liked what they saw. I knew he was the owner because he had the name Diana tattooed on his arm. It seemed to be a real family business, with his sons working as waiters. The restaurant specialized in many types of seafood. We were very happy with the meal, so we returned there the next day.
